About Me
Who is Maaja? Maaja is my online name. At the time I started this website,
back in 1997, I was new to the internet and wanted to preserve my privacy.
Maaja, which means "mother", stuck.
I am married and mom to four children--two are biological and two are adopted
and have special needs. My youngest son, 10 years old, has Fragile X Syndrome,
growth hormone deficiency and probable reactive attachment disorder. My youngest
daughter, 7-1/2 years old, has congenital cytomegalovirus, mild cerebral
palsy and learning disability in math. My oldest two children are at the
other end of the spectrum.
I homeschooled our children for five years prior to returning to teaching
special education in the public schools two years ago. I have four NH special
education certifications:. These include certifications in general special
education, mental retardation, physical handicaps and emotional disturbance.
Currently, I am teaching a small group of significantly disabled students
who need a functional program. I love it (most days)!
I hope you find this website useful. I created it to share my knowledge
and experience, as well as to help you provide a great education for your
children. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
